The School of Chinese Language and Literature integrates the education of Chinese students with the education of international students. In 1985, it began to offer an undergraduate program in Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL); In 1992, it began to provide undergraduate education for international students; In 2004, it began to launch an undergraduate program in Chinese Language and Literature; In 2007, it began to initiate doctoral programs in Comparative Literature and Cross-Cultural Studies, teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages, and also language policy and planning; In 2010, it launched first-level academic master programs in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Chinese Philology, Comparative Literature and World Literature, Ancient Chinese Literature, Literature and Art, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, and a professional Master’s program in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. In 2019 and 2020, the programs teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages and Chinese Language and Literature were successively rated as national first-class undergraduate programs.

The school has 72 faculty members, of which 67 are full-time teachers, 64 percent have doctorate degrees, and 55 percent have senior titles. They have also hired well-known scholars such as Le Daiyun, Huang Tianshu, and Zhao Jinming as honorary professors, Cao Shunqing, Fu Gang, Li Yuming, Masini (Italy), Michael Lackner (Germany), Hamar·Imre (Hungary), KAM Seowon (South Korea) and other well-known scholars at home and abroad as visiting professors. The school also has more than 40 external teachers.

The school has three teaching units, including the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the Department of Chinese as a Foreign Language, and the Chinese Training Center. In addition to the teaching units, it also has seven research departments. The Department of Chinese Language and Literature is responsible for the undergraduate education of Chinese students and the postgraduate education of both Chinese and foreign students. The Department of Chinese as a Foreign Language is responsible for the undergraduate education of Chinese Language international students. The Chinese Training Center is responsible for the non-academic education of Chinese Language international students. There are more than 1,200 students in the school, including more than 500 Chinese students and more than 600 international students.

The school strives to drive teaching with scientific research. In the past five years, teachers and students at the school have undertaken 12 National Social Science Fund projects (including 1 major bidding project), 10-plus provincial and ministerial projects, and more than 20 school-level projects, and have published 30-odd monographs and more than 800 papers. The school has also launched academic publications such as "International Chinese Language Education (Chinese and English)" and "Humanities Journal".
